I'm in the process of the final specifications on my proposed conservatory. The room will be basically an open extension of the living room and extend across the back of the house. Heating efficiency is high on the agenda as it needs to be usable all year round - as such I have chosen Pilkington Activ Blue 'K' glass for the roof.
Options for the windows are as follows and this is where I need some guidance. (The room will be south west facing).
Firstly - I have been advised to go with Planitherm Ultra N (with Argon) at a fairly significant extra cost - is there a justifiable benefit to this product over standard glazing? What extra should I expect to pay for Ultra N?

Secondly - Should I be considering a combined solar control and insulating product for the side windows, like Planitherm 4S (the roof is Activ Blue so will offer some solar control)?

Any guidance greatly appreciated

I assume it is solaglas version of pilkingtons optiwhite. Both are to get the u values down. If you used standard pilks k for example with no argon this would give you a D rated window, if you use ultra or optiwhite with argon and a warmedge spacer this will give you A rated. This energy saving glass does exactly that, warmth in and reduced energy bills. not to sure if this applies to conservatories though because of the roof and if it there is no door between cons and house you will need building regs i belive.

Planitherm ultra N is the best insulating glass you are going to get in the domestic market, 30% better than K. I would even recomend it for the roof, maybe a pilk blue active outer pane, s/steel spacer, argon filled Ultra N inside pane would be about the best you will get in a roof DG unit. As for the side panels Ultra N low E every time , I supply it as standard , but I am not cheap , I really don't know heating cost savings v lifetime usage etc but you don't get a better insulator in a dg unit.
AVOID optiwhite/ low iron every time , they are used to maximise the flawed window energy rating scheme and allow 66% more UV through to trash your furnishings. you will need to go down the building regs route and the best insulation is your friend.
