Hi Tony,

Gaz is quite right in that there are just the two main bodies in FENSA and Certass. The other route which is often overlooked though is the local authority building control. Anyone can (for a small fee) request the local authority to inspect installations.

Essentially all FENSA and Certass are, are self certifying schemes, meaning the registered installation companies can certify the work themselves to say it complies with building regulations.

It is worth noting that an installation does nt have to be carried by a company registered with any body, but in this case the customer would have to go the local authority route.

Cheers,

I dont know much about them Im afraid. I have heard that they are a bit cheeper than FENSA but thats it.

When I first started out I used building inspectors on every job but it was a pain in the butt and cost £140 a time in my area. Also I lost out on a few jobs where people expected me to be FENSA registed and seemed suspicious that I wasnt.

Is fensa just something you buy your way into then?

It always seems to be presented by companies as a mark of best practice or something?

Fensa and Certass are both registration bodies. Certass goes on price it is cheaper for very small companies, but fensa works out cheaper the larger you are.

However Fensa has 90% of the market AND customers know who they are........why make things difficult having to explain who Certass are?
