I am looking for a possible solution to a problem and would value any advice.

The situation :-

1. We have 14mm DG units installed in wooden frames.

2. The rebate and beading are external.

3. We would like to fit 28mm units with integrated Venetian blinds

The problem :-

1. The present rebate would have a mere 2mm depth with 28mm in place

2. removing the windows to increase the depth of the rebate is a No

3. the outside of the windows are 'stepped' so there is room for a 1.25" x 0.5" 'bead'

.....|14mm unit here|

The question :-

Is fitting a DG unit in this manner a feasible proposition? Is it asking for leakage problems?

Thanks

Edit :- The diagram was marmalised on posting so I've added some ...

seems like a lot of hassle, can you not just get external blinds

There seem to be alot of different companys making these now surely one of them could do a unit smaller than 28mm.

Whoever you end up using make sure they have been around for a while and have a good garentee. I fitted some of these units 6 or 7 years ago and had nothing but problems with them. The makers went bust and I had to dismantle the units to repair the blinds 3 times before we finally gave up and just put in normal glass.

I assume they are a better design nowadays but the last lot ended up costing me twice what the job was worth so I havent risked it again yet.

Does anyone know how reliable they are now?

Do the job right the first time!

Could we simply stick to the problem I originally described? Would it be possible to fit in this way successfully?

glassgen :- No. We do not like them.

gazman :- our present Pellini ones in folding doors have a 10 year warranty. 28mm is minimum for venetian.

The only way we fit larger units into small rebated frames is to make a step unit, inside pane is smaller than the outside so the inside pane sits inside the frame and the oputside sits in the rebate..i have never put blinds in them though..first time for everything

Now that is interesting! Can't see a problem with the blinds, just some trim round the inside. I'll speak to Morley Glass and see if they can do it.

Thanks

However, I would still like to know whether my original idea would work.

Thanks

You could run a router round the rebate to increase it's depth/width but will struggle at the corners. It will be messy and needs joinery skills but is do-able. Personally I would be wary of fitting a very expensive unit like that to timber frames, I don't give longer than a 12 month warranty to timber glazed units . the stepped unit option sounds the best if you MUST have blinds inside the unit.
